Hi all,
I recently acquired a Winchester Model 1886 rifle in .45-90 caliber. It was shipped from Winchester’s warehouse to the London Arms Company 9 December 1914 (Cody Firearms Museum letter). Marked on the metal and buttstock rifle are British military proof/acceptance and ownership/sale marks. I found reference to no more than 50, but probably 21 of these rifles bought for use with incendiary bullets to shoot down Zeppelins in the book “British Secondary Small Arms, 1914-1919, Part 2, RFC and RNAS Small Arms by A. O. Edwards. I would appreciate any information or help towards an article I’m putting together about the use of these, and other, rifles used against Zeppelins and blimps/ balloons over England or in Europe during World War One. What would be most useful are first hand accounts, official documents or period images. Any contributions would be attributed and greatly appreciated!
