Prior to the formation of the RAF, RFC aerodrome construction seems to have been a responsibility of the Royal Engineers, with the Canadian Forestry Corps (assisted by Finnish, Portuguese and German POW labour) clearing the sites before construction work.
After 1 April, 1918, the RAF seems to have assumed responsibility for construction work and there is a TNA file to cover the transition period – http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7678884 – at least from an accountancy perspective.
Anyone know of any sources of information on the RAF Aerodrome Construction unit which seems to have disappeared as part of demobilization ?
