It has been suggested that putting information on this forum may help our family to trace the whereabouts of our Grandfather George Hayward’s medals which we have last tracked to an auction in 1996. These include the MC and are particularly of interest because he was one of the highest ranking Gunner/observer aces and was with 22 Squadron and almost certainly flew in the first flight on 1 April 1918 under the newly created RAF banner, on which occasion many photos were taken. After the war George qualified as a pilot and then an instructor based at Duxford with no2 Flying School before moving to Digby. Sadly he was killed in an accident with his pupil in 1924. His widow, with three young children, was left in straightened financial circumstances and sold the medals, possibly in the 1940s. The onward sale in 1996 was believed to be to an American but unfortunately the auction house records no longer exist, apart from a photo of George and his squadron taken on 1 April. Incidentally, George’s story is included in the book Fallen Eagles by Norman Franks.
If anyone can help with information on this it would be much appreciated.
Nick Hayward
