IWM mock up ? fuselage with camera installed
Another view
Thanks for these images Nick. I see there are some stencils visible on the woodwork in the second image. I wonder if these may hold clues to whether this is indeed a ‘mock-up’ – or the fuselage section of an actual machine?
Do you know if there is any provenance with this piece?
PHO 74 is the IWM catalogue number, it being part of the Photography collections. According to http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/search?query=PHO%2074&items_per_page=10&page=1 this is an LB camera installed in a Bristol Fighter fuselage section. It is stored southside at Duxford, along with another cockpit section which seems to for demonstrating bomb dropping.
East Fortune has an Avro 504K forward fuselage, ordered from AV Roe postwar, for the display of a rotary engine which does suggests that the industry was quite happy to cater for any ‘new market’.
