In America they still use the term furlough to mean “laid off” or “stood down”. I have seen it used when an airline, going through a low period, “fuloughs” a number of pilots. They are either unpaid or paid very little but are still on strength. However, what it means in America now may not be the same as its usage in Europe during the Great War.
