I typed a reply yesterday but it seems to to have disappeared.
I had already seen the piece in “Aeroplane”, as well as items in a number of newspapers, but not the piece from “Flight”. However none answered my questions.
Most of the accounts of the crash state that Darbyshire was attempting the first stage of a flight to Montrose and yet the Squadron did not set off until almost a week later leading me to wonder if this flight was exploratory and that the unnamed passenger might even have been the 2 squadron CO, major Burke.
I have found a photo of the crashed B.E.1 but cant reproduce it as Hulton/Getty hold the copyright and want a small fortune for it to be used.
