Crossing the Line

Renowned film director and WW1 enthusiast Peter Jackson made a short film in 2008 following the story of two young combatants. Crossing the Line was the first film to be made with the Red One camera. It was made as a test for the prototype camera and was shot over just two days.

Hawker

Hawker is a new, independent film which tells the story of a pivotal few days in World War 1 when airmen were transformed into fighter pilots for the first time in history. The 23 minute film uses a mix of replica aircraft, hand-built miniatures, life-size cockpits and CGI to recount the story of the action on July 25th 1915, when Hawker downed three enemy aircraft in one sortie and won the first Victoria Cross for his achievements.

Where they Flew and Where they Fell

Produced as a VHS programme in 1989, we have now digitised this almost “lost” film and made it available to GWAS members. The VHS tape sleeve notes are included which give the geographical details of the airfield and other important sites visited in this show.

Tapes were provided by Ray Vann and Bill VanderstCrossing the Lineen.

Canvas Eagles

This almost borrows the title of a 1971 book by Steven Longstreet (whose dustjacket we have borrowed anyway for this header).

It is believed that there was a series of these planned but this is the only one which has survived. The presenter, Don MacLean, whilst known as a showbiz personality at the time, was a genuine fan of First World War aviation. The show dates from about 1990.

Long time CCI/GWAS members and authors Alex Imrie and Ray Vann contributed to the programme.
