If we are to believe popular culture, there was little understanding of combat stress in WWI, which senior officers, more concerned with good order and discipline than with the welfare of their men, viewed as either cowardice or malingering.
However, in reality, the British Air Services showed compassion, recognizing combat fatigue early and managing personnel with care. Their approach goes some way to explain how they were able to sustain intensive air operations in the face of significant attrition
